Wood burning stoves: Environmentally Friendly and Economical.
Under the Clean Air Act 1956 and 1968, local authorities may declare the whole or part of the district of the authority to be a smoke control area. Burning fuel that produces smoke in that area is prohibited. DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affaris) maintains a list of Smoke Control Exempt Stoves that are suitable for burning wood in smoke controlled areas.
If you are in a smoke control zone, you are not permitted to burn fuel that emits smoke in either a stove or fireplace. You are permitted to burn a smokeless fuel on a multi fuel stove or fireplace.
There are a range of multi fuel stoves with very high efficiencies that are not on the DEFRA approved appliance list for use in smoke controlled zones. These stoves can be used in smoke control zones as long as smokeless fuels are to be used. For most of these manufacturers, the cost of the DEFRA testing procedures outweigh the possible increase in sales from being on the exempt list.
